What does a steel building cost?

Enter your dimensions for a budget range on an open-sided pole barn, a cold-formed building or a pre-engineered red-iron building, supplied or supplied and erected. This is planning money — the number you need before drawings exist, to size a loan, test a site or settle an argument. It is not a quote. Building system

Base price is the building supplied and delivered. Erection and everything else below adds to it.

Openings adds

Overhead doors are priced at 10′ × 10′. Larger openings add more.

Panel colour adds

Roof

Galvalume is the standard mill finish and carries no upcharge. Painted panel adds to both the sheet price and the trim.

Excluded — budget separately

  • Foundation, slab, piers and all concrete
  • Sitework, grading, drainage and paving
  • Permits, impact fees and plan review
  • Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and fire protection
  • Interior finish, framing, ceilings and lighting
  • Mezzanines, cranes and special loading
  • Sales tax, bonding and builder's risk
  • Unusual wind, snow, seismic or exposure requirements
  • On pole barns: walls. The kit is a roof on posts — open on all four sides
  • On pole barns: sealed engineering for permitting, if your county asks for it

The foundation is the one that surprises people. On a typical slab-on-grade shop it can run a quarter to a third of what the building itself costs, and it is not in any number on this page.
